In the vibrant intersection of personal narrative and cultural evolution, Emirati artist Alia Hussain Lootah crafts a visual language that speaks to the soul of contemporary UAE. Her multidisciplinary practice serves as a bridge between intimate maternal experiences and broader societal transformations unfolding across the Emirates.
A distinguished alumna of the Salama bint Hamdan Emerging Artist Fellowship (SEAF), Lootah first captivated audiences through her early exhibitions at Sikka Art Fair before establishing herself as one of the region's most compelling artistic voices. Her recent solo showcase at Art Dubai 2024, following notable presentations at Abu Dhabi Art and Aisha Alabbar Gallery, reveals an artist deeply engaged with materiality as a metaphor for emotional landscapes.
This season marks an exciting new direction as Lootah collaborates with renowned Nigerian artist Peju Alatise to co-direct A.R.M. Holding's innovative Children's Programme. Centered on "The Future of Water," this groundbreaking initiative transforms environmental education into immersive artistic exploration for young minds across the Emirates.
"Water carries profound cultural memory in our desert nation," she explains during our conversation at her Dubai studio. "From pearling traditions to modern desalination plants, it represents both heritage and innovation. Through tactile workshops where children see how water interacts with different materials we're helping them develop not just awareness but genuine emotional connection."The artist shares insightful perspectives on contemporary motherhood creative expression among Emirati youth and why art remains vital for social dialogue Edited excerpts from our conversation:What makes art such an effective medium for teaching sustainability concepts?"When children dip brushes into colored water watching pigments bloom across surfaces they're learning about fluid dynamics absorption patterns - scientific principles made visceral This sensory approach creates neural connections that traditional lectures can't match I've seen shy students become passionate advocates after such creative encounters."Your sculptural works often explore maternal relationships through abstract forms What draws you to this thematic territory?"Motherhood reshapes perception like clay beneath fingers My pieces capture those imperceptible moments when protection becomes release or when solitude transforms into connection The UAE context adds fascinating layers - how ancient childrearing wisdom coexists with digital-age parenting challenges." How would you characterize generational shifts in parenting approaches within Emirati society?"Contemporary mothers navigate unprecedented intersections Many now pursue doctorates while maintaining traditional family values This duality appears in my work through contrasting textures - smooth resin against rough natural fibers representing modernity harmonizing with heritage Young parents today are creating beautiful hybrid approaches that honor both realms."/PP strong Is your artistic process primarily autobiographical or observational?/STRONG>>PP "It begins personally then ripples outward When I sculpt folds resembling swaddling clothes Im documenting my own journey while recognizing universal threads Every mother knows that bittersweet tension between holding close And letting go My hope is viewers see their stories reflected too""PP strong What excites you about emerging Emirati artists?<>PP Their fearless blending!
